I am a 6th generation North Carolinian. Although I have lived other places in my life and enjoyed those places while living there, I always felt like an outsider. The South- and North Carolina, in particular- just feels achingly familiar to me and very much like home. I understand and value the people, the myriad accents, the story-telling, the humor, and our shared history. I live in Raleigh now, but growing up, I lived in a small town 90 miles west of Raleigh, where the undulating landscape, rural and green, and still dotted with aging tobacco barns, seems unchanged from what I remember and see in my mind’s eye. There’s a timelessness to the landscape, and the photographs I’ve made here are tangible reminders— memories put to paper— of what I know so well and remember to be true. Cane River Tubing is a found scene that, when I first laid eyes on it, instantly took me back in time, and yet is very much of the moment.
