Cynthia Matthews is a nationally recognized photographer whose work has been widely published in books and periodicals, exhibited in group and solo shows and acquired by corporations, museums and private collectors.

She was raised in southern Ohio near the family farm. In 1970 she arrived in New York City and began a career in photojournalism. By the early 1980s she was photographing extensively for Town & Country magazine, capturing the essence of country gentry and the sporting world they inhabit. A painterly quality emerged in these color photographs of foxhunts and field trials, stag hunts and horse races.

Just as her color images suggest a painterly quality, Cynthia brings a similar lyrical elegance to her black & white photographs; in particular, her series of evocative images of New York in the snow.

Cynthia continues to embrace the craft of photography and finds a certain joy in printing and toning her own prints
the old fashioned way – in the “wet” darkroom. Besides simply preferring silver gelatin prints, she likes to think of the

darkroom as a “garden of surprises and happy mistakes.”
